05.02.01 - CABLE Liner Shuttle for Birmingham

DCC (Doppelmayr Cable Car), a company of the Doppelmayr-Group), and BIA (Birmingham International Airport) have signed the contract for the installation and operation of a CABLE Liner Shuttle. The CABLE Liner Shuttle will connect the terminal building and the train station of Birmingham International Airport. The system will be completed in spring 2002. The scope of delivery of the order placed with DCC is more than ATS 200 million.

The CABLE Liner Shuttle is a fully automatic rope-hauled people mover system operating in the reversible mode. In Birmingham, DCC will construct two parallel independent systems - with a length of 585 m and a speed of 10 m/s (=36 km/h) each. Each system consists of one train with two vehicles and an overall capacity of both trains of 1,490 persons per hour and direction. With a travel time of less than 90 seconds, the CABLE Liner Shuttle will substantially contribute to increased comfort of passengers at Birmingham International Airport.

DCC will not only be responsible for construction but also for operation of the facility and thus guarantee the required availability of 99.5%. Doppelmayr can rely on its experience gained during the first year of operation of the CABLE Liner Shuttle in Las Vegas - with more than 21 million passengers.

Thanks to its technical competence and strong customer focus, DCC won out over six competitors.

With more than 7 million passengers per year, Birmingham International Airport is one of the five largest airports in the UK. Construction of the CABLE Liner Shuttle will enable the airport to optimise passenger flow and adapt its infrastructure to the requirements of the new millennium.
